St Petersburg Park System and Green Space

Published on 01/25/23:

St Petersburg, Florida is a nice blend of city life and nature, with the #1 park system in Florida and the 3rd largest preserved urban waterfront space in North America.
Who loves green space and nature? I recently mentioned how I felt being outdoors and exploring helped me both mentally and physically. Well, a study released yesterday seems to confirm how I feel when I’m able to spend more time in nature.
Before I discuss the study, did you know that St Pete has the #1 park system in Florida and #14 in the entire United States? This is per The Trust for Public Land, the national nonprofit with a mission to “create parks and protect land for people”.

St Pete Has 3rd Largest Preserved Waterfront Greenspace in North America

Additionally, St. Petersburg boasts the third largest urban waterfront park system in North America, according to the St Pete Economic Development Corporation. This includes 137 Parks and 7 miles of preserved downtown waterfront! Rather remarkable, thanks to St. Petersburg Parks & Recreation and City of St. Petersburg, Florida. Photos are just a few examples of natural areas within 4 miles of St Pete.

Benefits of Spending Time in St Petersburg’s Green Space

Yesterday, a 6K person study was published in the Occupational & Environmental Medicine noting that “visiting nature 3-4 times a week was associated with 36% lower odds of using blood pressure pills, 33% lower odds of using mental health medications, and 26% lower odds of using asthma medications.”
The article noted that “Prior studies have also found people living near green spaces reap significant health benefits. A 2016 study compared the amount of plant life and vegetation near the homes of almost 100,000 women. After eight years, the researchers found having access to the most green space reduced the women’s death rate by 12% and improved their mental health.” Additionally, “A 2019 study of green spaces around the globe found people who live near them are less likely to die prematurely.”
