American Stage in Downtown St Pete

Published on 09/19/22: Who knows American Stage in downtown St Pete? With “Green Day’s American Idiot” running from Sept 7 – Oct 2, this is my first #LovingStPeteDateNight idea. Keep trading for a #ProTip below on how to save 50%+ off your tickets to future shows!

St Pete Date Night Series

Yes, I said I’d be starting a date night/day series soon, and well, that’s today! Going forward, date ideas will be mixed into my regular “things to do and places to see” posts. Most of these would be good with a group of friends too, taking pressure off the ol’ “date” concept. I didn’t marry until my mid-30’s, I get it. Both the good and the bad. Sometimes just better to go out with a group of friends, it will all happen when time is right.

Non-Traditional Dates vs Traditional

First, I typically enjoy planning non-traditional “dates”. Well, traditional in the sense that I’ll be opening Amy’s car door, but non-traditional in that we’re headed to a snorkeling spot after closing said door. However, I’ll cover both typical and atypical angles here on LSP, ensuring all the great 4.5+ rated locally owned businesses are represented. #SupportLocal

American Stage in St Pete

First up, American Stage in downtown St Pete with a 4.8/5 rating out of several hundred Google reviews. As usual, venue history is a bit further down for those who enjoy knowing the backstory.

Green Day’s American Idiot

For the next few weeks, “Green Day’s American Idiot” is the featured production at American Stage! “The two-time Tony Award-winning hit musical boldly goes where the American musical has never gone before.” Music is by Green Day, Lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong and book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer.

Consider the Previews at American Stage

We attended one of the first showings (preview) for a much-discounted rate of $20. This is the full performance where they work the kinks out, but we saw none! A very talented group of individuals, doing what they love. It’s open seating for previews, though we found there’s really not a bad seat in this small venue. We arrived right before showtime and found ourselves on the back row, perfectly fine. With this in mind, you may want to keep those first couple showings on your radar, taking advantage of the discount. Regular price is around $45 in the case of the American Idiot and other shows I looked up.

Regular Cost is Typically $45

Performances rotate every couple months and they’re already selling tickets into August 2023. Sure enough, the very next performance, “The Colored Museum” has initial previews priced at $20 vs $45! #ProTip

History of American Stage:

This began in 1977 as The Palisades Theatre of Florida at Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College). The focus at that time was being a theatre for students and teachers. Then in 1979, the Junior League of St Petersburg funded Palisades to “convert an old cinema house in downtown St. Petersburg into a 179-seat performance space”. And here we are today, at 163 3rd St N with a cool local theater open to the public.

The theater’s vision is “to be a vital arts leader, connecting our community to world-class productions that celebrate the most powerful stories of the moment and the most defining stories from our past.”
