Docking Boat in Downtown St Petersburg

Published on 01/30/21: While downtown St. Pete is fantastic on its own, what puts it over the top for many is the fact it’s waterfront. Did you know there’s a municipal marina for docking your boat in Downtown St Pete? Pretty neat having the option to boat into the big city for restaurants and shopping! There are slips by Fresco’s restaurant, plus new slips were just added to the St Pete Pier!

Make sure you bring ropes to tie up and observe the no wake zones on the way into the downtown area. We’re so happy to have the new slips at the St Pete Pier because the slips at Fresco’s filled up quickly and often meant idling until someone finished dinner. 🙂

All of this boating to restaurants sounds fancy, at least for this guy who grew up on an avocado farm. But of course, everyone exiting the boat slips are in flip flops and dressed ‘Pinellas casual’.  Boating, fishing, and other marine activities are simply a way of life for many in this area.

Best news of all is that additional slips were just added on the St Pete Pier! Between the municipal marina and pier docking, there’s now quite a few slips for boaters.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or new to the boating scene, St. Petersburg has something for everyone.

Why Boating in St. Petersburg?

St. Petersburg, affectionately known as “St. Pete,” is renowned for its beautiful waterfronts and warm, inviting climate. The city boasts a variety of boating experiences, from serene day trips on calm waters to thrilling explorations of local marine life. The combination of natural beauty, family-friendly attractions, and excellent weather makes it a top choice for a memorable boating experience.

Planning Your Boating Trip

1. Choose Your Boat: Depending on your family’s needs and experience level, you might opt for a sailboat, a motorboat, or even a pontoon for a leisurely cruise. Many local rental companies offer a range of options, including boats with safety equipment and easy-to-navigate features, perfect for families.

2. Pick the Right Time: The best time for a boating adventure in St. Petersburg is typically from late fall to early spring when the weather is pleasant and the waters are calm. However, summer can be enjoyable too, as long as you keep an eye on the weather forecasts for any sudden storms.

3. Safety First: Ensure everyone in the family is equipped with life jackets, and familiarize yourself with the boat’s safety features and local boating regulations. It’s always wise to review the basics of boating safety with your family before setting out.

Must-See Destinations

1. Tampa Bay: Explore the expansive Tampa Bay, which offers ample opportunities for sightseeing and wildlife watching. You might catch a glimpse of dolphins, manatees, or even sea turtles. The bay’s calm waters are perfect for a relaxed family cruise.

2. Egmont Key: A short boat ride from St. Petersburg, Egmont Key is a picturesque island that features pristine beaches and historic ruins. It’s a great spot for a family picnic, shell hunting, and a bit of history with its old lighthouse and military fortifications.

3. Shell Key Preserve: This barrier island is known for its incredible shelling opportunities and beautiful, undeveloped beaches. It’s a serene spot for a day trip where your family can enjoy snorkeling, picnicking, and simply basking in nature.

4. Fort De Soto Park: Located at the entrance of Tampa Bay, Fort De Soto Park offers stunning views and a range of activities. You can dock at the park’s marina, explore the historic fort, or relax on the park’s beautiful beaches. The park also features a dog park, making it a great spot for families with pets.

Family-Friendly Tips

1. Pack Essentials: Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, hats, snacks, and plenty of water. A cooler with refreshments will keep everyone hydrated and happy throughout the trip.

2. Entertainment for Kids: Bring along some games, books, or tablets for the kids to enjoy while on board. Having a few activities on hand can help keep them entertained during downtime.

3. Plan for Breaks: Include planned stops for swimming, picnicking, or exploring. Regular breaks will keep the crew refreshed and make the outing more enjoyable for everyone.
