Egmont Key Sandbar is Family Fun!

Published on 10/29/20: While beautiful Egmont Key is only accessible by boat, you need not own a boat to reach it. Read ahead to learn how!

Egmont Key is full of history and only 20-25 minutes southwest of St Pete. It’s different than the previous boating destinations (sandbars) we’ve mentioned. In the case of Egmont, you’ll enjoy nature trails, Fort ruins, a lighthouse standing since 1858, an abundance of wildlife, and fishing opportunities. Egmont is definitely a favorite of our family!

From Egmont Key social media:

“…In 1898, as the Spanish-American War threatened, Fort Dade was built on the island and remained active until 1923 […] Although this park is primarily a wildlife refuge, it can be a personal refuge – a place to relax and collect shells along secluded, pristine beaches. Accessible only by boat, Egmont Key has a unique natural and cultural history, including a lighthouse that has stood since 1858. During the 19th century, the island served as a camp for captured Seminoles at the end of the Third Seminole War and was later occupied by the Union Navy during the Civil War.”

For our son, walking around/thru an old Fort is the equivalent of Indiana finding the Holy Grail.

If you don’t own a boat, there are excursion companies to show you around! For instance Island Boat Adventures has Egmont adventures from $45 at the time of this posting.

Exploring Egmont Key: Florida’s Hidden Gem

Nestled at the mouth of Tampa Bay, Egmont Key is a serene retreat that often flies under the radar compared to Florida’s more renowned destinations. However, this unspoiled barrier island offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and outdoor adventure that makes it an essential stop for those seeking a truly off-the-beaten-path experience.

A Historical Haven

Egmont Key has a rich history that spans centuries. Originally inhabited by the Tocobaga people, the island’s strategic location soon caught the attention of European settlers. In the 19th century, it became a pivotal site during the Civil War and was home to a lighthouse and military fortifications designed to protect the entrance to Tampa Bay. The remnants of Fort Dade, which include old batteries and barracks, can still be explored today, offering a glimpse into the island’s military past.

Natural Wonders

One of Egmont Key’s biggest draws is its natural beauty. The island is part of the Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge, which means it’s a sanctuary for a variety of wildlife. The pristine beaches are not only perfect for sunbathing and swimming but also for spotting dolphins and sea turtles. The surrounding waters are teeming with marine life, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and kayaking.

The island is also known for its mangroves and salt marshes, which provide vital habitats for numerous bird species. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting everything from pelicans and ospreys to herons and egrets. The diverse ecosystems offer plenty of opportunities for nature enthusiasts to explore and enjoy.

Getting There

Access to Egmont Key is primarily by boat, as there are no bridges connecting the island to the mainland. The most common way to reach the island is by ferry from Fort De Soto Park, which is a short drive from St. Petersburg. Private boaters can also dock at the island’s designated areas. It’s a good idea to check the ferry schedules and availability in advance, as trips can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons.

Activities on the Island

Once on Egmont Key, visitors can immerse themselves in a range of activities:

  • Exploring Fort Dade: Wander through the historic ruins and imagine what life was like for soldiers stationed here. The crumbling walls and overgrown vegetation create a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere.
  • Beach Time: The island’s beaches are some of the most secluded and serene in Florida. Bring a picnic and enjoy a day of sun and surf.
  • Snorkeling and Kayaking: The clear waters around Egmont Key are perfect for snorkeling. Kayak through the mangroves or along the shoreline to get a closer look at the diverse marine life.
  • Wildlife Watching: Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, sea turtles, and a variety of bird species. The island’s natural setting makes it a great place for a peaceful nature walk.

Practical Tips

  • Prepare for No Amenities: Egmont Key is a relatively undeveloped island, so be prepared to bring everything you need, including food, water, and sunscreen. There are no shops or restaurants on the island.
  • Plan Ahead: Check the weather forecast and ferry schedules before you go. The island is exposed to the elements, so conditions can change quickly.
  • Respect Wildlife: As a protected wildlife refuge, it’s important to follow all guidelines and respect the natural habitat of the animals you encounter.

Final Thoughts

Egmont Key is a treasure trove of history and nature, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Whether you’re interested in exploring historical ruins, relaxing on a quiet beach, or discovering the island’s diverse ecosystems, Egmont Key provides a unique and memorable experience. Pack your sense of adventure and make your way to this hidden gem—you won’t be disappointed.

If you’re looking for a destination that combines history, natural beauty, and tranquility, Egmont Key should be at the top of your list. So, set sail for this enchanting island and let the magic of Egmont Key captivate your soul.
