George McGough Nature Park – Narrows in Largo Florida

Published on 06/14/23: The amazing George C. McGough Nature Park. With summer upon us, look for some extra posts on great nature preserves, parks, wildlife encounters, ziplines (kids), places to launch kayaks/canoes, playgrounds …you get the general idea. George C. McGough Nature Park – Hidden Gem for many in St Pete (known by most in Largo/Seminole)

The George C. McGough Nature Park is a 26-acre nature preserve, known by locals as the “Narrows”.

Cost: Free entry, donations accepted

Address: 11901 146th St N, Largo (35 min NW of downtown St Pete)

Hours: Park is open sunrise to sunset. Nature center open 10am-5pm, 7 days a week

Restrooms: Yes

Parking: Easy, right outside the nature center

Wheelchair Accessible: The main rubberized trail is, however once you reach the narrow boardwalk there’s limited room to turn around

Animals/Wildlife: Nature Center with live animal exhibits and educational material, Birds of Prey enclosures (20+ rescued, non-releasable birds), turtle pond, and butterfly garden. You can purchase food to feed the turtles. Sarge is the beautifully huge Bald Eagle! All different species of owls, plus hawks and Kestrels. Colt enjoyed watching the volunteers feed them all! Great when the timing works out that way.

Trails: 1 mile comfortable rubberized walking trail (recycled), plus a number of side trails that extend further. Make sure to follow main trail to the benches overlooking the Intracoastal.

Kids: Small playground with a great zipline. Maybe the longest free zipline in our area. Know of others?

Volunteers Onsite: Yes, they’re very friendly and enjoy sharing their love of nature and wildlife with you

Dogs: No dogs allowed due to the captive birds

Shop/Toy Area: Yes, supports their cause

Shelters: Yes, can be reserved via their website

Birthday Parties: Yes, various $ options for parties, including a night hike, animal show, pinata, etc

Education: Field trips and classes and offered

Bicycles Allowed: No
