Gulf Coast Seafood Market in Gulfport

[fusion_dropcap boxed="yes" boxed_radius="0" class="fusion-content-tb-dropcap"]P[/fusion_dropcap]ublished on 08/04/21: Before I tell you about one of the most popular fresh seafood markets in our area, I’d first like to congratulate @DianaKane19 on Instagram and Jan Stephens Pierce on Facebook! They won the gift cards to Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream! Make sure you’re following @LovingStPete on Facebook and Instagram.

As a native Floridian, I grew up lobstering & fishing pretty much any opportunity I was given. An elderly snowbird even enlisted me at 14 to be his “charter captain” on his 16-foot boat during the winters (I kept the boat during the summers!). We made a great team, as he couldn’t drive the boat and I couldn’t drive the truck. The 😮 look when people saw us offshore was priceless. Unfortunately, I don’t fish nearly as much these days, so I’ve been researching where to buy our fresh seafood!

Friends recently took a sushi class and were told to purchase their fish from Gulf Coast Seafood in Gulfport! So Colt and I had to check it out.
I curiously asked the friendly staff “what days are fish delivered?” Turns out, because they wholesale in so much volume, they receive new fish daily. They keep their retail shelves full of fresh fish & can wholesale it later in the day. This allows the retail area to start new/fresh daily! View our stories for a video of their seafood lineup!

Gulf Coast Seafood is a Family Business

This is a family business, started in 1978 when John & Carol Merkle dreamed of selling seafood. In the beginning…“With the help of our parents we started a small retail store in St. Petersburg.” While they sold their original retail store to begin wholesaling, they’ve come full circle with this retail store in Gulfport!

Their website states that “Gulf Coast Seafood remains the leading seafood provider to discerning customers on the west coast of Florida”. Your purchases are wrapped in watertight bags that prevent leaks, as well as freezer burn if you decide to freeze. Ice is also provided if needed.

You’ll find all types of seafood, as well as Wagu beef, lamb racks, pork chops etc. Plus spices, drinks, lemons, recipes (free cards to take) and other supplies you’ll need for cooking!

Mike Braswell is a Tampa Bay Realtor, serving St Petersburg, Clearwater, all nearby beaches and more. Mike and his 6 year old son started LovingStPete in October of 2020 after a difficult year took its toll on local businesses. After being cooped up for portions of 2020 (lockdown) they decided to get out and explore, helping spread the good word about the local area he loves so much. Often even doing gift card giveaways to support local. LovingStPete is now followed by over 27 thousand people on social media! The majority of posts are informative on fun parks, activities, day trips, great restaurants, and in general provide a comprehensive tour of the area! His 6 year old son generally helps him gather the info, providing his wife some 'child-free' time in the process! A win-win, with his son being exposed to many great events and activities in the process.

Soon after receiving his bachelors in Management Information Systems, Mike developed and then operated a vacation rental advertising business for 10+ years as CEO/Owner. The business was eventually acquired by HomeAway/VRBO.

When not spending time with his beautiful wife and energetic son, Mike enjoys boating and is also an avid tennis player. An interesting fact about Mike is that he grew up on an avocado farm with over 15 varieties, some of which you can find in our local Publix/Winn Dixie as his dad still farms the same farm at 87 years old!
