Maximo Park with Disc Golf, Shaded Playground, Boat Ramps

Anyone know the largest archaeological site here in the Sunshine City? Couple clues. It’s also a park offering frisbee golf, 1.2 miles of ADA accessible nature trails, shaded & fenced playground, observation deck, many picnic shelters, 7 boat ramps, fishing, restrooms, allows dogs on leash, and has a very cool “beach” area, PERFECT for marine biology class with the kids!

Answer: Maximo Park

The “Beach” at Maximo Park

I write “beach” because this is one of the few Pinellas beaches that won’t make Dr. Beach’s list. The thing is, Colt finds it more appealing than even beautiful SPB. There are hundreds of tiny crabs to chase, “pirate boats run aground”, huge feathers from birds, and all kinds of crooked sticks. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We’ve had a blast every time at this amazing spot…he never wants to leave the crabs.

Per St Pete Parks and Rec: “This beautiful park is the largest of the City’s four archaeological sites at 70 acres. […] The park contains educational signs throughout describing the tribes that once inhabited the area.”

Maximo Park History

“The land contained within Maximo Park was first occupied by Native Americans at least 4500 years ago during the Late Archaic period. Excavations by USF in 1973 recovered shell tools & food remains of these early inhabitants in the southern portion of the park[…] Maximo Park was part of a much larger village that extended east along Pinellas Point and included extensive shell middens, at least one burial mound, and a large platform mound. This was a major town site of the Tocobaga Indians, historic descendants of the Safety Harbor culture.”

Address: 34th St. S. & Pinellas Point Dr. S

Mike Braswell is a Tampa Bay Realtor, serving St Petersburg, Clearwater, all nearby beaches and more. Mike started LovingStPete in October of 2020 after a difficult year took its toll on local businesses. After being cooped up for portions of 2020 (lockdown) Mike and his son decided to get out and explore, helping spread the good word about the local area he loves so much. Often even doing gift card giveaways to support local. LovingStPete is now followed by over 48 thousand people on social media! The majority of posts are informative on fun parks, activities, day trips, great restaurants, and in general provide a comprehensive tour of the area!

Soon after receiving his bachelors in Management Information Systems, Mike developed and then operated a vacation rental advertising business for 10+ years as CEO/Owner. The business was eventually acquired by VRBO. Mike has earned the trust of many large clients over the years. Such as NFL, Wynn Resorts, Blue Cross Blue Shield, VISA, Genuine Parts Company (NAPA Auto Parts), AT&T, and other Fortune 500 companies.

When not spending time with his beautiful wife and energetic son, Mike enjoys boating and is also an avid tennis player. An interesting fact about Mike is that he grew up on an avocado farm with over 15 varieties, some of which you can find in our local Publix/Winn Dixie as his dad still farms the same farm at 87 years old!
