Mullet’s Fish Camp Just South of Downtown St Pete

Published on 11/19/21: Going back to our roots with Mullet’s Fish Camp & Market! While fall is crazy for us, the schedule is winding down, so queue a gradual ramp-up of #SupportLocal posts and activity suggestions. Colt and I are giving away a Mullet’s gift card to one Facebook follower and one on Instagram!

Winners selected Tuesday morning (11/23). To enter, simply comment below with your favorite non-profit. Enter on both platforms if you wish! In a future post you’ll see how the non-profit ties in with my fall (raised 5 figures for the kids!) and future goals for LovingStPete! Official Rules:

Onto Mullet’s Fish Camp!

Colt wanted to visit an arcade last weekend. I countered with “how about a tiki hut, live music and 15 minutes of an iPhone game?”. And with that, we were off to the 102 year old converted home which houses Mullet’s.

MFC is several minutes south of downtown St. Pete, situated directly across from Munch’s (my May 11th post). This is part of the appeal, after all, this is the “new neighborhood seafood joint” […] A place to revive a sense of community, just like St. Pete’s early pioneers had intended.” Once we were on property, we nearly forgot we were in St. Pete at all.

Owner is from Mid-Peninsula Seafood Market

Many know co-owner Brian Rose from Mid Peninsula Seafood Market & Restaurant (1400 Google Reviews, 4.5/5 stars). You may not however know his long time friend and co-owner of Mullet’s, Nick Brown. Nick is listed as a ‘foodie & natural-born host’, which was evident as he walked around checking on tables. His dedication to the business was clear, even gesturing to his hair, sharing that he went “all in” on the concept. Ha. The layout of the restaurant indeed has the more serious ‘business’ area in the front and the ‘party’ area in the back with live music, a tiki bar, long outdoor patio bar and giant Jenga. On Sunday, Godfrey brought smooth island music to the tiki bar. Felt like we were in the Caribbean.

Made from Scratch

MFC’s goal is to make nearly everything from scratch, down to the basics and serve the freshest seafood possible. The menu has a # of different types of fish and sauces (plus other items). “We’re pairing over 15 types of fish prepared with house-made sauces and slaws for flavorful dishes you won’t find anywhere else in St. Pete.” I also noticed that their prices don’t break the bank. Food was delicious!!

Gift Cards and Mullets

Colt and I have purchased our own gift cards 95% of the time, however lately businesses have been offering to donate them (to you), feeling our write-up is support enough. In this case, after hearing Nick’s story of creating MFC with Brian, we certainly bought our own cards. Props to these gents for living their dream, creating a great restaurant and local hangout that checks off all the boxes!

Speaking of mullets, I actually still own a mullet wig that I wore a significant portion of my 20’s and 30’s…ie Park City, New Orleans…it traveled well! Last year I even greeted our new next door neighbors wearing it. A great icebreaker! You really have to respect the mullet. Odds are great that I’ll wear mine the next time we visit or either grow one out! Not sure.

Mike Braswell is a Tampa Bay Realtor, serving St Petersburg, Clearwater, all nearby beaches and more. Mike started LovingStPete in October of 2020 after a difficult year took its toll on local businesses. After being cooped up for portions of 2020 (lockdown) Mike and his son decided to get out and explore, helping spread the good word about the local area he loves so much. Often even doing gift card giveaways to support local. LovingStPete is now followed by over 48 thousand people on social media! The majority of posts are informative on fun parks, activities, day trips, great restaurants, and in general provide a comprehensive tour of the area!

Soon after receiving his bachelors in Management Information Systems, Mike developed and then operated a vacation rental advertising business for 10+ years as CEO/Owner. The business was eventually acquired by VRBO. Mike has earned the trust of many large clients over the years. Such as NFL, Wynn Resorts, Blue Cross Blue Shield, VISA, Genuine Parts Company (NAPA Auto Parts), AT&T, and other Fortune 500 companies.

When not spending time with his beautiful wife and energetic son, Mike enjoys boating and is also an avid tennis player. An interesting fact about Mike is that he grew up on an avocado farm with over 15 varieties, some of which you can find in our local Publix/Winn Dixie as his dad still farms the same farm at 87 years old!
