Passage Key Is a Boat Ride Away, Near Anna Maria Island
Published on 10/11/20: Want to pretend you are on a Caribbean Island for the day? Great news for St Pete residents is that we can, via simply a 30-minute boat ride to Passage Key!
This beautiful view is located just south of us on a island called Passage Key. One of our favorite spots to boat, especially during the week if possible! Weekends can get a bit crowded, though not too bad. We would like to keep it that way, thus this post early on in the life of ‘Loving St Pete’, before we have more followers. Only joking.
We’ve seen all sorts of marine life in the clear waters, truly phenomenal! I should add, be prepared to see the occasional sunbather in *very* limited clothing (we park/move to avoid when our son is with us). Such a beautiful spot! Note that feet must stay wet at Passage Key, per the rules. In our case below, water was definitely lapping up to our feet, though in hindsight, we should have pulled our chairs out slightly deeper.
Address: Off the coast between Anna Maria Island and Egmont Key

Exploring Passage Key: A Hidden Gem Near Anna Maria Island
When you think of Anna Maria Island, images of charming cottages, serene beaches, and crystal-clear waters likely come to mind. But just off the coast lies a lesser-known treasure that adds to the allure of this stunning region—Passage Key.
What is Passage Key?
Passage Key is a pristine, uninhabited barrier island located in the Gulf of Mexico, not far from Anna Maria Island. This small, sandy oasis is part of the larger Tampa Bay National Wildlife Refuge and is known for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich wildlife.
Why Visit Passage Key?
- Pristine Natural Beauty: Passage Key is a picture-perfect escape with its untouched beaches, clear turquoise waters, and minimal human impact. It’s the kind of place where you can find your own patch of paradise and truly connect with nature.
- Wildlife Watching: One of the island’s standout features is its role as a vital habitat for various wildlife species. Birdwatchers will be particularly thrilled, as Passage Key is a crucial nesting site for seabirds, including royal terns, least terns, and black skimmers. The island’s quiet, undisturbed environment makes it an ideal spot for observing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.
- Water Activities: With its crystal-clear waters and gentle waves, Passage Key is a fantastic destination for water enthusiasts. Whether you enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or simply floating in the calm Gulf waters, the island offers a serene setting away from the crowds.
- Peace and Solitude: Unlike the more developed areas of Anna Maria Island, Passage Key provides a rare opportunity for solitude. There are no commercial establishments or tourist trappings here—just you, the sand, and the sea. It’s the perfect place to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
How to Get There
Passage Key is accessible only by boat, and there are several options for getting there from Anna Maria Island. You can charter a boat or join a guided tour that includes a stop at the island. Many local tour operators offer trips to Passage Key, providing transportation, equipment, and guidance for making the most of your visit.
Important Considerations
- Permits and Regulations: As a protected area, Passage Key is subject to regulations to preserve its natural environment. It’s important to check current regulations and obtain any necessary permits before visiting. Respect wildlife and follow all guidelines to help maintain the island’s pristine condition.
- No Facilities: Since Passage Key is uninhabited, there are no facilities such as restrooms or food vendors. Be sure to bring everything you need for a day at the beach, including water, snacks, and sun protection.
- Weather and Safety: Always check the weather conditions before heading out. The Gulf of Mexico can be unpredictable, and it’s crucial to ensure safe conditions for boating and other water activities.
In Conclusion
Passage Key is a hidden gem that complements the charm of Anna Maria Island. Its unspoiled beauty, abundant wildlife, and tranquil atmosphere offer a unique experience for those seeking a more secluded retreat. Whether you’re a nature lover, a wildlife enthusiast, or simply in search of a peaceful escape, Passage Key promises an unforgettable adventure in one of Florida’s most enchanting natural settings.
