Pinellas Ale Works in St Petersburg, Family and Dog Friendly

Published on 06/10/23: Who knows Pinellas Ale Works? This is another family friendly brewery in St Pete, located near downtown, in the Grand Central District. A great spot! They offer 30+ taps, a large outside beer garden (shaded), expansive air-conditioned tap room, games, trivia, board game night, darts, food truck(s), and many award-winning beers! And of course, they’re dog friendly. I mean, you sort of need to be with the acronym PAW! They even offer a “yappy hour” – scroll down for other weekly events.

Locally Owned and Award Winning Beer

Pinellas Ale Works is locally owned and carries a stellar 4.8/5 stars on Google Reviews with nearly 400 reviews, certainly checking off the LSP criteria. PAW is part of my #LovingStPeteBreweries series. I included the brewery’s  history at the bottom of this post for those who enjoy that info.

It’s a bit of an inside joke in our family, but I often gravitate to the “World’s Best” or “House Specialty” item on any menu. I mean, I don’t jump up and down like Will Ferrell, saying “you did it, you finally did it!”, but it makes my decision a lot easier. In the case of Pinellas Ale Works, when you have a beer that’s won 4 awards in recent years, it’s an easy decision for the first beer of the night (or day). That’s their 1888 Imperial Stout, the 2022 Gold Medal winner in the Best Florida Beer Competition, ‘Sweet/Strong Stout’ category. It also won bronze in 2020, silver in 2018, and gold in 2017. So yea, give that one a try if you enjoy a good stout.

Also, call a sober driver, it’s 10.5% ABV!

If you’re into IPA’s [raising hand], try the Thrill Hill – Double IPA. This was the 2020 ‘Best Florida Beer Competition’s Bronze Medal winner in the ‘Imperial IPA’ category….checking in at 8.4% ABV.

Dog Friendly and Support Local

You’ll quickly notice that PAW most certainly loves dogs, St Pete, and beer. For instance, a beer named “Thrill Hill” – I have yet to take Colt on THAT ride, maybe soon. If you don’t know Thrill Hill, google for now. I’ll post about it sometime. And the beer named “1888”. Well, that’s the year “in which the first train pulled into the last stop in southern Pinellas County […] so we present this beer which boasts bold roast barley, chocolate, toffee, dark fruit and coffee flavors big enough to satisfy even the most demanding aristocrats.”

As you know, there are many advantages to having breweries nearby. One advantage is the “to-go” options for your favorite beers! Not just “a” beer in the case of PAW, but 1/6 and ½ kegs, crowlers and growlers between 16 and 64 ounces, plus 4 and 6 packs of select beers.

Make sure you add Pinellas Ale Works to your list of places to visit!

Pinellas Ale Works History

Dennis Decker and Matthew Brown are the two who started Pinellas Ale Works. In 2014, they began their transformation of the historic Harold’s Auto Body Building into the brewery it is today. I read that turning an auto body repair shop into a brewery is not for the faint of heart. Whew. After much work, they opened their doors in 2016!

Dennis is the head brewer and notes on their website: “…it was a long road to get to where we are now, but worth every bit of the effort. We’re proud to be a part of the St. Pete brewery culture and we’re committed to giving our patrons a world-class product.”

After only a year in operation, Dennis and crew began distributing kegs and cans to “local restaurants, bars, and beer stores in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties.” They leverage a large 15 barrel brewing system that fortunately can keep with the growing demand of their award winning beers. “PAW beers have racked up multiple awards including 8 medals in the Best Florida Beer Competition, and even a Great American Beer Festival Silver medal for Milk Bone Sweet Stout!”
