Sanding Ovations Sand Sculpture Festival

Published on 11/15/22: Who knows Sanding Ovations in Treasure Island? This is the ‘Top Gun’ of sand sculpture competitions, with the best of the best sculptors converging in Treasure Island this Thursday thru Sunday, Nov 17th-20th. This year’s theme is “Once Upon a Time”, featuring incredible sand sculptures that “will transform you into a land of storybook fantasies”. There’s no entry fee to this event!

Even more than incredible sand sculptures!

This all takes place on a beautiful beach, with many food and drink vendors, bands, fireworks, arts and crafts for sale, plus restaurants and beach bars nearby. So even if someone in your group isn’t into huge sand sculptures, I’m fairly certain they’ll still be good. Plus, like I say, there’s no entry fee to the event, it’s free! #NoRegerts #NotEvenOneLetter

As the organizers share reminders about this week’s event, I’m enjoying personal memories from Nov 2020. Back in crazy 2020, this was one of our first “adventures” on LovingStPete! Colt and I headed to Treasure Island, ate lots of food, listened to live music, and pondered how in the world these ‘guest room size’ sandcastles are built! No way around it, they’re impressive.

Bands, Food, Drinks, Kites, Arts and Crafts

This particular event can’t be much more “Florida”. Colt and I even enjoyed flying kites on our visit, with affordable kites sold onsite by Windworks of Madeira Beach. We paid our $12-$15 and enjoyed 45 minutes of easy flying in the tropical breezes. Believe we actually made it home with our kite, not so lucky on one other outing. Colt was 6 and there were lots of tears. While I’m a “you fell, rub dirt on it, keep going” dad, I felt really bad for him. He was a mess and I couldn’t do anything as he watched it sail into the wild blue yonder. Hold on tight!

Parking and FAQ for 2022

For full details, parking, and FAQ’s, visit Sanding Ovations’ website below. Direct link is to the “parking” page, as imo that might be the trickiest aspect of this adventure, though it’s not so bad. I also included pics of the maps and parking situation. We parked about 2 blocks from the Thunderbird Hotel on our trip, worked out great.
